As most European integrated projects, Euro-Thymaide is organized in work packages with lead investigators for each.
Moreover, four biotech SMEs are part of the consortium to assure the rapid exploitation of the scientific results.
After re-examination of a revised implementation plan taking into account European Commission reviewers’ report, it was decided to merge two separate work packages into a single WP1.
The main objective of the first work package—initially formed by two separate thematic groups but united due to common research scope—is to describe detailed maps of intra-thymic self-antigen expression in different species as promiscuous gene expression does not always faithfully mimic physiological gene expression in peripheral tissues.
The new designation of this Work package is "Molecular and cellular
control of promiscuous self-antigen expression in the thymus: AIRE and
beyond "
Its objectives include to study animal models (mice and rats) and human tissue with a special focus on T1D and myasthenia gravis and the aim of developing T cell epitope-based vaccines. Among other research outcomes, the University of Liege has recently filed a patent on a thymus-based tolerogenic vaccine against T1D .
